Dufftown Whisky Museum

The Dufftown Whisky Museum provides a unique opportunity to discover the secrets of whisky making in days gone. It also gives a fascinating insight into the lives and times of whisky smugglers.

The Museum is open most weekdays from mid/late June to September. If closed you can contact René Ramon at Morven, The Square,Tel: 01340 820507 who will be happy to open it and show you around. It is manned by volunteers (some of whom are retired whisky distillery workers), who have extensive knowledge and stories about whisky and its history.

Many of the exhibits were provided by local distillers as well as HM Custom and Excise. These include illicit stills as well as other tools and equipment used for whisky manufacture in times gone by.

Dufftown Whisky Museum Opening 2002

It was drams all round at the opening of Dufftown’s Whisky Museum on the first day of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2002.

The honour of cutting the ribbon went to well-known whisky writer Charles MacLean, editor of Whisky Magazine.

In his opening speech, Mr MacLean said that earlier that day he had received an email from abroad in which the writer had complained that there were no whisky museums in Scotland – and that he would be pleased to put the gentleman right now that Dufftown boasted this splendid new facility.

After cutting the ribbon before a small crowd of festival visitors and locals, everyone was invited inside to view the exhibits and to try a dram of a new vatted whisky specially made for the occasion by Fiona Murdoch of The Whisky Shop.

This unique, one-off whisky contained all seven of Dufftown’s single malts and soon had the party going with a swing.
