Whisky Nosing and Tasting 2008

Glenfiddich

Dufftown's Nosing and Tasting evenings for 2008  got off to a flying start with a selection of Glenfiddich whiskies comprising of the world’s No 1 -  the 12yo, followed by the 15yo, 18yo and 21yo. The presenter,  Bert Macor, newly appointed Senior Guide for Glenfiddich, excelled himself by putting together a great presentation and let the 20 whisky enthusiasts enjoy great drams.As a special, Bert let the audience have a taste of the Glenfiddich 30yo at 55.1% Cask Strength which was acclaimed to be the best of the evening. The ‘blind’ nosing competition was won  by Andreas Hohenhövel  from Germany after a “nose-off”and he was presented with a bottle of Glenfiddich 15yo.

Duncan Taylor

Another great evening was had by all on 24th June when Mark Watt presented a  marvelous selection of Duncan Taylor's Independent and unique bottlings. The capacity crowd of worldwide whisky enthusiasts were given drams from now closed Glenesk CS, 29yo Cameronbridge Single grain, 24yo CS Bowmore, BenNevis & Glen Moray. The nosing competition was won by Magnus Johansson from Sweden who was presented with a bottle of Glen Moray 16yo.

 

Inverhouse Distillers

Managers Derek Sinclair and John MacDonald from Inverhouse Distillers presented the 26 strong audience

with Old Pulteney 12yo, AnCnoc 12yo, Speyburn 10yo and Balblair 1989 & 1997. The visitors came from as far away as Mexico to taste the superb malts and the nosing competition winner, after a 'nose-off', was Martin Seib from Germany. He was presented with a bottle of Balblair by Inverhouse's general distillery manager Derek Sinclair.

Glenmorangie

It was a pleasure for René to introduce Martin Grant from Moët & Hennessy U.K., owners of the Glenmorangie Distillery, who gave a great talk and tasting on the Glenmorangie range of whiskies. These included Glenmorangie Original, La Santa, Quinta Ruban, Nectar D'or and their recently launched Astar at cask strength. The evening was enjoyed tremendously by 24 people and winner of the nosing competition was Martin Otto, again from Germany, who was presented with a bottle of Quinta Ruban (Port finished Glenmorangie) by Martin.

Tomintoul

Tom Gerrie, Production Manager and Brewer at Tomintoul Distillery invited 27 whisky lovers to taste the Tomintoul 10yo, new 12yo Sherry Oak, and the superb 16yo and 27yo Malts. In addition Tom brought along the Old Ballantruan heavy peated malt also distilled at Tomintoul. Again it proved to be that the 16yo was the favourite dram of the evening. The visitors came from as far as the USA and Australia but it was our first lady winner of the year, Christine Loschko from Germany who won the Nosing competition.

Glenfarclas

The 6th Nosing & Tasting of 2008 was sponsored by Glenfarclas Distillery. Ian McWilliam, Marketing Executive of Glenfarclas brought along the 10yo, 15yo and 21yo and the 105. We had a capacity crowd of 32 people who enjoyed listening to Ian whilst he was showing pictures of the distillery and the process of distilling malt whisky. After the tastings the competition was won, after a 3 way 'nose-off,' by Robert Sender from Germany. The picture left shows the 'over-the-moon' winner with his prize donated by Ian.

Diageo Classic Malts

Everyone's favourite speaker and whisky connoisseur Miss Georgie Crawford came all the way from Talisker Distillery to present to a capacity crowd, the best of Diageo Malts. She brought along the latest bottling from GlenKinchie 12yo, Cragganmore 12yo, a new bottling of Singleton of Glen Ord (only available in the Far East at the moment), Speyside's Dailuaine 16yo F&F, the "2007 Best whisky in the World" Talisker 18yo and the Lagavulin Distillers Edition 1991. Two whisky enthusiasts won the nosing competition and were presented with a bottle of 20yo Talisker Ltd. Edition. The whole audience applauded Georgie and Diageo for a great evening of entertainment.

Glenfarclas

The 8th Nosing & Tasting was again sponsored by Glenfarclas Distillery. Robert Ransom, Director of Sales & Marketing brought along the 10yo, 15yo and 21yo and the 105. We had another capacity crowd of 32 people who enjoyed listening to Robert whilst he was showing pictures of the distillery. The competition was won by Naomi Nabbs from Australia. Left shows the winner with her prize bottle of Glenfarclas 105 donated by Robert.

Balblair Distillery Manager John MacDonald from Inverhouse Distillers presented the 24 strong audience with Old Pulteney 12yo, AnCnoc 12yo, Speyburn 10yo and Balblair 1989 & 1997. The crowd enjoyed the tastes of the superb malts and the nosing competition winner, after a 'nose-off', was Andrew McGlen from Yorkshire with Gunter Sommer from Switzerland a close second. On the right they were presented with a Balblair 1997 and a Speyburn 10yo by John.

Adelphi Distillery

Dufftown's favourite "Venue of the Year", the weekly Nosing & Tasting in the Whisky Museum, welcomed Sales & Marketing Director Alex Bruce from Adelphi Distillery Ltd. who brought along superb single cask malt whiskies to the enjoyment of the crown of whisky lovers.

Glenlivet 1978 29 yo Speyside, 52.1% vol., cask no. 13503

Glenrothes 2000 8 yo Speyside 58.0% vol., cask no. 2414

Caol Ila 1982 26 yo Islay 55.8% vol., cask no. 686

Breath of the Isles 1993 15 yo Island 56.2% vol., cask no. 3748.

The nosing competition was eventually won by John Salisbury from England.

Balvenie Distillery

Richard Cotton, manager of the Glenfiddich, Balvenie & Kininvie distilleries, invited a more than capacity crowd of 34 visitors to sample Balvenie Double Wood, Signature, 15yo Single Cask & Balvenie 21yo Port Cask whiskies. One person nosed the correct selection during the competition which was won by Caroline Cowie from England.

Tour around Scotland

Dufftown 2000 Ltd. arranged this penultimate Nosing & Tasting of 2008 by inviting a good crowd to sample Malt Whiskies from the Lowland, Speyside, the Highlands, the Islands and Islay. Newcommers to drinking whisky were amazed at the different tastes regional distilleries can produce. Only one person had the 5 correct answers during the nosing competition and that wasDavid Yeomans from Australia.

Aberlour Distillery

On the 9th of September, our last N&T evening of the year, Julian Holder from Aberlour Distillery, invited a audience of 26 visitors to sample Aberlour 10yo, 12yo, 16yo and Aberlour a'bunadh. The whiskies were greatly enjoyed by the crowd who prefered the cask strength A'bunadh above all the other drams. After an extensive nose-off 2 persons, who both had the whole selection correct, received a bottle each of the new Aberlour 18yo. Dufftown 2000 Ltd. would like to thank all the Distilleries and Independent Bottlers for their contribution in goods and time, towards these events.

Without them we would not be able to arrange these evenings which help us to maintain and sustain the Whisky Museum. We hope that we may count on their support again for the 2009 season which starts on Tuesday 16th June for a period of 13 weeks.
